Anwitha Invisible Grills

Invisible Grills or MS Grills for Bangalore Apartments?

For decades, a welded MS (mild steel) grill was the only way to make a balcony or window safe. Today most Bangalore apartment owners compare it with invisible grills. Both stop a fall; they differ in almost everything else.

Safety

A properly fitted invisible grill — SS 316 rope, 2-inch gap, aluminium channels fixed into concrete — protects as well as an MS grill. Vertical ropes are arguably safer for toddlers, because the horizontal bars of many MS designs work like a ladder.

View, light and air

This is where invisible grills win clearly. MS grills put a frame and bars across the opening; invisible grills are a few millimetres thick with nothing across the middle.

Rust and maintenance

Mild steel rusts, especially where rain runs down the slab edge, and needs scraping and repainting every few years. SS 316 rope needs only an occasional wipe.

Association rules

Many gated communities forbid changes to the building elevation. MS grills usually count as a change; invisible grills generally do not, which is why most associations approve them.

The verdict

For high-rise apartments, glass-railed balconies and anyone who values the view, invisible grills are the better choice. MS grills still have a place for ground-floor security, where the concern is intruders rather than falls.
